There are many things we don’t know about murders in the USA.
This seems surprising in the age of data collection we live in.
One stat we can get close to is the clearance/solve rate. Unfortunately, it’s an ugly number; only around 60 percent. That means in almost 40% of murders, nobody is held accountable.
No doubt many unsolved homicides are gang related and witnesses or those with knowledge about the murder will not talk for fear of reprisal or out of allegiance.
Despite the advances in technology, many killers get away.
Another ‘gray’ statistic that is murder by relationship – The FBI states about 41 percent of murders involve a family member or an acquaintance & strangers account for about around 9%. That leaves appx 49% as unknown. That seems unacceptable.
